ToggleThe Truth About MacBook OEM Parts: Why “OEM” Is Not a Bad Word
Whenever a customer walks into our shop in Subang SS15 for a screen replacement or battery swap, one question always comes up: “Boss, is this part Apple Original or OEM? Is OEM bad quality?”
There is a massive amount of confusion across Malaysia when it comes to the word OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Many Mac users have been misunderstood to believe that “OEM” automatically means a cheap fake, a low grade knockoff, or a dangerous 3rd party part.
This is completely untrue.
Understanding how Apple actually manufactures hardware, how trademark laws work, and what “IRP certification” really means helps you make informed decisions when repairing your Mac, without paying premiums price for marketing labels.
Apple Does Not Manufacture Its Own Battery or Screen
To understand OEM parts, you first have to understand their global supply chain.
Apple is a design and software company, they do not manufacture battery cells or glass screen display themselves.
Every single battery inside a MacBook, iMac, iPhone, or iPad is manufactured by specialized 3rd party component factories located across China, Taiwan, and South Korea. Those 3rd party factories assemble the components and supply them to the main assembly lines.
In plain English: all MacBook battery and screen are made by 3rd party manufacturers. Apple simply places their trademarked branding on the final assembled unit.
“Apple Original” Is a Legal Trademark, Not a Secret Formula
Why don’t independent repair shops like Orange Fix advertise replacement parts as “Apple Original”?
The terms “Apple Original”, “Apple Genuine”, and the Apple logo itself are strictly protected by trademarks. Legally, only an official authorised Apple service centre can advertise and market parts using those trademarked phrases.
Independent shops can source hardware directly from established component manufacturers in China, Taiwan, and South Korea, the exact same manufacturing hubs supplying global tech supply chains. Because these factories produce parts for the open market, independent specialists can access components built to matching factory specifications.
We simply cannot use the word “Apple Original”, as doing so would infringe on Apple registered trademark rights.
The IRP Myth: What “Independent Repair Provider” Really Means
In recent years, many repair place across Malaysia have begun advertising themselves as IRP (Independent Repair Provider) certified. Many consumers assume this certification guarantees that every single repair performed at that shop uses 100% official Apple original parts.
That is a major misconception.
Being IRP certified simply means that a shop has an active account allowing them to buy parts through Apple official logistics channel. However:
IRP shops are not restricted to using official parts exclusively.
An IRP shop still maintains the option to offer non genuine, OEM, or lower quality 3rd party parts for repairs depending on what profit margins they want to hit or what the customer requests.
Having an IRP badge does not automatically guarantee that every repair done is using official parts. It simply means they have access to order from direct from the official channel.
Battery Quality Exaplains: Grade A vs. Original Capacity vs. Recon
Since battery cells are built by 3rd party manufacturers, overall quality depends entirely on the cell grade selected by the shop.
Recycled / Reconditioned / Used (AVOID): These are extremely cheap online listings (often RM80.00 – RM100.00). Factories remove degraded cells from discarded electronics, wrap them in new plastic casing, reset the cycle counter, and sell them as “new.” They fail quickly and carry a high risk of swelling.
Grade A Option: Brand new, stable cells designed for budget onscious users. They offer a reliable 3 to 4 hours of daily unplugged usage without sudden power cuts.
Original Capacity Option: Premium, high-density cells manufactured to match the exact original milliampere hour (mAh) and Watt hour (Wh) ratings of your Mac when it was brand new.
At Orange Fix, we strictly stock and install Grade A and Original Capacity batteries. We completely refuse to touch recycled or reconditioned cells.
The Right Questions Every Mac Owner Should Ask
When taking your Mac in for a battery or screen replacement, stop asking: “Is this Apple Original?” (which triggers legal trademark technicalities).
Instead, ask the technician team these 4 direct quality questions:
“Is this replacement component brand-new, or is it a recycled/reconditioned unit?”
“For batteries: Is this a Grade A cell or a true Original Capacity cell matching the factory mAh rating?”
“Does this screen replacement retain proper colour calibration and True Tone parameters?”
“What direct warranty coverage do you provide on this specific part?” (At Orange Fix, we back our original capacity battery replacements with a 12 months 1 to 1 warranty).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does using an OEM MacBook screen mean I will lose display quality or True Tone?
Not if you choose a high grade replacement installed by experienced specialists. Low quality aftermarket panels often suffer from washed out colours and lost True Tone functions. At Orange Fix, we use good quality replacement to maintain proper colour profiles and preserve True Tone functionality so your screen looks identical.
Why do some online sellers offer MacBook batteries for under RM100.00 if they claim to be new?
Those too cheap to be true battery are almost confirm made from reconditioned or recycled battery cells. Some vendors take degraded cells from old discarded battery, put them in fresh outer casings, and reset the cycle count to show 0 cycles. They suffer from high voltage instability, expand rapidly, and always fail within a few weeks of use.
Is an IRP certified shop guaranteed to perform better repairs than an independent specialist like Orange Fix?
No. IRP certification simply gives a business access to Apple official parts ordering system. It does not dictate the physical soldering skill of the technician team, nor does it guarantee that the shop will use official parts for your specific job. A dedicated independent shop with nearly 20 years of component level experience often provides faster turnaround times, lower costs, and longer direct warranties.
